Even preventive healthcare, which aims to identify and address problems before they become serious, needs to be adapted to those with demanding lifestyles. When high performers sought support from the conventional healthcare system, they were often advised to “slow down” or “do less.” While this well-intentioned advice might work for some, it doesn’t align with the reality of those who rely on their physical and mental performance daily. Dips in performance, when presented to healthcare providers as potential early symptoms of issues that needed attention were rarely addressed. The disconnect between traditional healthcare and the needs of these individuals was evident.
We also became concerned about the long-term impact of high-performance lifestyles. Stress, irregular sleep patterns, and difficulty maintaining a healthy diet—all common in high performers—often result in elevated biomarkers that signal increased risks of heart disease, metabolic dysfunction, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. These risks are frequently overlooked due to the relative youth and perceived resilience of high performers, or the belief that the benefits of treatment may not outweigh the potential side effects. This is where precision medicine becomes essential. By identifying each individual’s unique genetic, physiological, and lifestyle factors, precision medicine allows us to tailor treatment plans that are not only more effective but also minimise side effects and unnecessary delays. The role required him to maintain peak physical condition while working 12-14 hour shooting days. Why the Need for High Performance Medicine?
We developed this concept in response to our belief that a more tailored form of care is needed—one that addresses the unique pressures and health needs faced by individuals striving for long-term excellence.
Over nearly a decade, our team has provided medical care for men and women who consistently operate at the highest levels of human performance—primarily special forces and other elite military personnel, but also athletes, actors, executives, and entrepreneurs. These individuals share a common trait: the need to perform at peak levels under immense pressure, without significant downtime.
Defining High Performers
It’s important to clarify what we mean by high performers as there is no universally accepted definition across human sciences. It’s tempting to rely on externalised benchmarks like “world-class,” “top 1%,” or “unrivalled in their field,” but these terms are of limited use in a medical context. We are not concerned with rankings; we focus on the impact that performance has on health and how health influences the ability to perform.
We define high performers simply as individuals expected to consistently succeed. Importantly, our definition does not rely upon what success means for them. We don’t make assumptions about how their success compares to that of their peers, nor do we focus on the accolades they may or may not receive. Crucially, it does not matter whether this expectation to succeed is self-imposed or comes from external sources.
What matters is the expectation and drive towards success. It is this relentless pursuit—rather than a specific outcome—that defines high performers in terms of their health and highlights the need for a tailored healthcare approach. Consistent striving for personal excellence, when properly managed, can foster continuous improvement and adaptation—known as allostasis.
